Start with the big splits. The vanilla, modded and official lists cover how the server is run, and community covers the rest. PvE players want the PvE list; new players should look at servers for beginners.
Then narrow by who you play with: solo, duo, trio or full clans. Gather rate has its own boards: 1.5x, 2x, 3x, 5x, 10x and 10x plus. Region boards for EU, US and AU sit alongside them.
A few lists are about a mode rather than a rate: build, aim training, roleplay, primitive, zombie, battlefield, creative and tutorial. If you just want a fresh start, the just wiped list is the one to watch, with the wipe schedule and force wipe countdown close behind.

Questions
How are the servers on each list ranked?
Each full list is ordered by live player count, read from the public server list and refreshed every five minutes. Nothing else moves a server up. The three busiest named on this page are the top of that live count at the moment you load it.
Do servers pay to appear on a Rust Leaderboard list?
No. Position comes from players online, not from payment, votes or favour. If a placement is ever sold it will be marked as sponsored and kept separate from the ranking. The counts are live, so a server that empties drops off the top three quickly.
What does the number next to each list mean?
It is the count of servers that currently match that list's rule, such as PvE, trio or 2x. It changes as servers appear, change their settings or go offline. The three busiest are a snapshot of the top of that list, not the whole table.
Should I join the busiest server I see?
A high count means more players, which also means more competition for loot and space. Check the wipe timer, group limit and region on the individual server page before you commit. A quieter server early in its wipe can be a better start than a packed one that is a week old.
